Description:

The North Wind Maple is a Staff Favorite! Red leaves in spring, green in summer, orange to vibrant red in fall. Grows 12-15" per year. Excellent specimen tree. Cold winter tolerant. Cross between a Japanese and a Korean maple.

Ornamental Features

North Wind® Maple is primarily valued in the landscape for its ornamental upright and spreading habit of growth. It has attractive green deciduous foliage which emerges red in spring. The lobed palmate leaves are highly ornamental and turn outstanding shades of scarlet and orange in the fall.

Landscape Attributes

North Wind® Maple is a deciduous tree with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.

This is a relatively low maintenance tree, and should only be pruned in summer after the leaves have fully developed, as it may 'bleed' sap if pruned in late winter or early spring. Deer don't particularly care for this plant and will usually leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. It has no significant negative characteristics.

North Wind® Maple is recommended for the following landscape applications;

  • Accent
  • Mass Planting
  • Hedges/Screening

Planting & Growing

North Wind® Maple will grow to be about 20 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 15 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 2 feet from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 60 years or more.

This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This particular variety is an interspecific hybrid.

More Info

In the Spring, its leaves are a burnt-orange and will fade to a light green. Its new growth throughout the Summer is a bright pinkish-red. Its Fall display starts out with orange and will fade to a vibrant red.
